Donor services
Some families are only made possible by the generous act of donation. We require many more donors to help couples achieve their only hope of having a baby. Fertility SA offers a comprehensive Donor/Recipient programme including donor oocytes (eggs), sperm and embryos.
There are many reasons why individuals and couples access donated gametes or embryos. This decision can be a complex one, and at Fertility SA, we here to support you at every step of the way.

There is a minimum criteria for the donation of embryos, eggs and sperm and not all are accepted for the donor program.
Donor’s are required to undertake counselling and medical appointments. Fertility SA ensures that donors have fulfilled all requirements of the NHMRC guidelines and the RTAC code of practice

Using donor sperm
There are a number of circumstances where the use of donor sperm is a consideration.
These include:
- Heterosexual couples where the male partner has no sperm or carries the risk of passing on a genetic condition
- Same-sex couples who require the use of donated sperm to achieve a pregnancy
- Single women who require the use of donated sperm to achieve a pregnancy
Fertility SA can offer three different options for sperm donation:
- A known donation where recipients have a sperm donor who is known to them
- From the Seattle Sperm Bank in the US. Fertility SA has access to a select group of de-identified (privacy protected) sperm donors
- From locally sourced Adelaide sperm donors. Fertility SA has access to a select group of de-identified (privacy protected) sperm donors
With all options for using donor sperm there are requirements for a number of medical appointments, counselling appointments and the sign off of the Donor Management Group.

Donor oocyte (egg) program
There are many reasons why individuals and couples may need to access donated oocytes (eggs) in order to have a child.
- A woman’s own eggs are failing to fertilise or create embryos that are able to sustain an ongoing pregnancy
- Ovarian failure due to chemotherapy treatment for cancer
- Premature ovarian failure or menopause
- Women who have a high chance of passing on a serious genetic condition to their children
Oocyte donation programs include:
- Known donation – where recipients have an oocyte donor or seek an oocyte donor who is known to them
- From the World Egg Bank in the US (www.theworldeggbank.com).
Donor embryo program
Embryo donation offers the opportunity of conception to another couple using embryos created during the donor couple’s IVF treatment.
Embryo donation is available to individuals and couples who:
- Are unable to utilise their own gametes for conception due to various genetic or medical issues
- Have had unsuccessful IVF treatment using their own gametes
Embryo donation programs include:
- Known donation where donor and recipient have exchanged names and information about themselves. Together this group (donors and recipients will decide on the level of contact, both current and future, as well as the type and degree of pertinent information they wish to share with each other
- De-identified donation undertaken by couples wishing to donate their embryos without meeting the recipient prior to donation
